Research by Deloitte (2024)  has revealed that the cost to UK employers of poor mental health is £51bn per year calculated as the combined costs of mental health-related absenteeism, presenteeism and labour turnover.

What the data tells us...
  • 20% workforce reported feeling unable to manage stress/pressure at work

  • 63% experienced symptoms of burnout (feelings of exhaustion, mental distance from their job or feelings, or decline in performance).

  • 9% of professionals are experiencing thoughts of suicide or self-harm

  • Poor mental health accounts for over half of all work-related illnesses.

  • Mental ill health is now the most common cause of work-limiting conditions among those aged 44 yrs and younger.

The impact of poor mental health has a significant effect on your business and can be measured across your people in terms of levels of productivity, performance, engagement, morale, sickness absence and retention.

Return on Investment (ROI)

Deloitte's report included an analysis of ROI for a variety of interventions including...

  • Employee Assistance Programmes (EAP's),

  • long-term mental health programmes,

  • awareness and education,

  • leadership training,

  • digital occupational stress-management strategies

  • screening staff

  • individual therapy

...and this showed on average, for every £1 spent on supporting their people’s mental health, employers get nearly £4.70 back on their investment in improved productivity. This increases to £5 per £1 invested in training programmes that educate, raise awareness and upskill employees on mental health.

The highest ROI estimated at £6.30 for every £1 achieved by utilising early interventions, such as organisation-wide culture change and education, than more in-depth support that may be needed at a later stage when a person is already struggling.
